On numerous occassions when we are enjoying company in our home our poodle named Tax decides to do drag her butt accross the carpet and sometimes she engages in butt circles. Our guests are always polite and sometimes snicker, but its embarrassing.

If this happens a lot Tax could have irritated anal glands. Anal glands are normally expressed on their own when a dog passes stool. For whatever reason sometimes these glands don't express and they become full of liquid which causes irritation. The vet office that I work at usually just the owners bring their dogs in to have those glands expressed if their dog is scooting or licking that area.

There could be several explanations.
She may have a matt on her bum and it is dragging on her skin. She could be trying to get it off.
She may have worms.
She may have a 'dingleberry' (poop) hanging on back there.
She may just itch.
I would take a look. If not, next time you take her into the vet, make sure she has been de-wormed.

My friend said that her dog does that if the groomer gives her dog a close butt shave - said it's itchy from the hair growing back.

She's expressing her anal gland. When you have her groomed, be sure they're taking care of that. It's gross, but ALL dogs do it. They really do. It's when my chihuahuas try to do it on my bed that I lose it, and they are banished from the bedroom for awhile. Ewwww!

has her anal gland been drained lately?? most groomers will do this with frequent grooming appts , sometimes you have to ask though. also a way to notice if her gland is full is that she will have an odor to her
