As I have considered different Armed Forces, I have heard a lot of trash talk about Navy ships. "It's no fun being cooped up in a metal box all day", I'm told. But then there are some people who say they loved the Navy, but they never explain why. Please explain what the best thing about being in the Navy is, and make it exlusive to the Navy and not to other branches. (So don't mention college money)

Seaman Recruit Melvin forgot Navy Hospital Corpsman as those in the Navy who could actually see combat.
When an Army Soldier screams MEDIC!!!!!! they are yelling for one of their own. But when a Marine screams CORPMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! they are yelling for a Navy guy.

Best thing about being in the navy... hmmm...

In the Army and Marines it is very much stressed physical fitness. long road marches and lots of physical work. plus when you go to war you are most likely going to get shot at personally. and unlike video games there is no respawn.

In the Airforce. unless you are that 2% that are pilots or aircrew, you are stuck way behind the lines doing nothing more than overglorified mechanic or supply or administration work

In the Navy even if you are nothing more than a supply guy or cook you are right there with the ship as they go through their paces. you are there for the missile exercises and drill. the live weapons fire, the general quarters drill. though a pain in the butt at the time they are exciting in your memories.
To this day I cannot watch a movie and hear the GQ alarm without my heart upping a few beats and the adrenaline pumping.
The Navy is highly technical in almost everything they do and you have a good chance at getting something exciting to do. Even the cooks get special duties other than cooking during special evolutions.
During my time in the Navy I have been to...
Hawaii
Guam
Tahiti
Fiji
Olongapo City (snicker.. those who know.. KNOW)
Hong Kong
Singapore
Phuket, Thailand
Pusan, Korea
Sasebo, Japan
Yokosuka, Japan
Tokyo, Japan
Atsugi, Japan
Columbo, Sri Lanka
Fujairah, UAE
Dubai, UAE
Abu Dahbi, UAE
Jebel Ali, UAE
Bahrain
Not to mention various places stateside.

Join the Navy, See the world
unless you sign up for Subs... they sink right out of port and dont come back up until they are ready to come back into port.

UPDATE:
Ah yes the food. Thanks for reminding me Robert.
Surf and Turf just about every friday and Steel Beach picnics every other Sunday (Operations permitting)
Sliders during Midrats

and just occasionally those after nightfall getaways topside by yourself with nothing but the thrum of the engines. the wind singing in the antennaa, the waves sliding by.
and the uncounted splendor of the cosmos spread out above you....

Okay, I served 15yrs and I'd have to say the TRAVEL !! I visited Hawaii more times than I can count, spent 6 months in Japan, I also visited Korea, Russia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Austrailia, Baharain, Kuwait, and the UAE. That doesn't include the travel within the states.

Also... the FOOD is much better than MRE's or field-chow.

Living on the boat has improved GREATLY over the last 20 odd years... better ventilation in berthing compartments. Email, satellite phones, and satellite TV are available !!

The only thing I ever really didn't like about the Navy: The cracker-jack dress uniform and the white uniforms... a PAIN to clean, iron and maintain!

Good luck and thanks for considering serving.

Welcome aboard Shipmate.

Travel, you go all over the world into many ports, you might see Hawaii, Hong Kong, St. Thomas Virgin Islands, Australia, etc.
Food, navy chow is awesome.
Support, you'll help in war efforts but seldom be a foot target.
Retirement: One of my biggest regrets in life is that I didn't stay in the Navy, I could've retired with a full pension at 39 (20 years).
Afterwards; veterans benefits, respectability and the ability to get most any job afterwards to begin a second pensioned career.
I believe the Navy is the easiest of the armed forces, if you're not a tough physical competitor. Todays Navy will guarantee you to work in the field of your choice. Bon Voyage' & Anchors Away!

Old Navy is nothing like Wal-Mart. Old Navy has some good quality clothes. I bought a pair of pj pants when the store first came about which was like 5-6 years ago and my pants are still in good condition. I really like their clothes they're cute and stylish and not too expensive! I would def recommend going there!

Tokyo is the capital of Japan, and the place where over 13 million people live, making it one of the most populous cities in the world but also, a big city to visit, find out more with hotelbye . Most of the city was devastated by the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, and then again by the bombing in the WWII, however, Tokyo was able to achieve a remarkably rapid recovery both times. The main attraction of Tokyo is the Imperial Palace with its beautiful 17th-century parks surrounded by walls and moats. The palace is still in use by the Imperial family.

"What's the best thing about being in the Navy?"

TRAVEL!

Exclusive to the Navy is multi-country travel. I saw 23 countries in 6 out of 9 years active service, the rest was in the yards in Bremerton WA, which was really fun back in the early 80's :)

We have the best medical training in the military. Now you can get advanced medical training in the other branches, but every corpsman has advanced training. I could do things as an E-1 that medics in other branches couldn't do until they were E-4

In the Navy, yes, you can sail the seven seas.
In the Navy, yes, you can put your mind at ease.
In the Navy, come on now people, make a stand.
In the Navy, can't you see we need a hand.
In the Navy, come on, protect the motherland.
In the Navy, come on and join your fellow, man.
In the Navy, come on, people, and make a stand.
In the Navy, in the Navy.

You really don't have to worry about combat other than being a seabee or a seal, and they espeically don't send their females to combat.

Plus, you can drink at all the ports.
