i totally disagree with all of these people on here and here is why. If you want a mustang, first off you need to find one with two things. a v-6 and a FIVE SPEED manual transmission. Second get a job cause your gonna need it to pay for the high insurance. This is gonna be unavoidable, due to your age and the style of car. Also make sure to get good grades in school cause most insurance companies give a good grade discount. Third is yes rear wheel drive cars handle different than front wheel drive cars. It is not as impossible to handle these cars as people think. All it takes is some good common sense. I grew up on a farm and I learned how to drive a 1 ton flatbed rear wheel drive truck with a manual transmission and now I can operate all kinds of cars and trucks with confidence. Bascially if you can learn how to properly operate a rear wheel drive car in the snow or slick conditions you can drive anything. There are too many people that put way to much stock into front wheel drive, its not nearly as great as some people think it is. Not trying to tell you what to do here just giving you some advice.

There's a big difference in those year ranges that you gave. First off, the 95 mustang is the most different mustang than all the others. It has the SN-95 bodystyle, but had the 5.0 liter pushrod engine in it. You can tell it's a 94 or 95 by looking at the tailights. If you noticed, mustangs all have 3 vertical tail lights. The 94-95's had 3 horizontal tail lights. Moving on, the 96-98 had the same SN-95 bodystyle, but with verticle tail lights and the more efficient modular 4.6 liter engine was introduced. These mustangs (the GT even) had about 215 horsepower, which is not all that powerful. The V6s had even less. In 99, the mustang got redesigned into the "new-edge" body style. Since 99, the cylinder heads were changed to "performance improved" or PI and therefore they (the GTs) created 260 hp to the engine. Now the 2001 mustang is another controversial issue. They changed a few things on the mustang at 2001 and a half. Since 2001.5, the mustang got new side scoops, new hood, and new spoiler. They also changed manual transmissions. It went from the T-45 Tremec transmission to a T-3650 which is slightly better. However, the engine block manufacturer switched from Windsor to Romeo, which is slightly weaker but not a big difference.

Now about the gas milage...it depends on your right foot. If you feel compelled to floor it all the time because of how much you like going fast, you will get crappy gas milage anyways. I managed to get 21 mpg with my 2000 Mustang GT in the city because I drove like a grandma one time. Another thing, the insurance isn't even all that bad. When I switched from my gas saving 4 cylinder Mazda to a Mustang GT, it only increased 20 bucks a month.

For a first car, I would recommend getting a 96-98 Mustang GT. Those year mustangs weren't all that powerful or fast so you shouldn't have trouble handling it. Also they are very common and pretty cheap too, you could probably find one for around $4-6000. If you happen to total it, hey no big deal it was a beater car. Once you learn how to drive well enough, you can get a 99-01 GT and really throw some rubber down.

actually my first car was a 95 mustang and pretty much what everybody is saying is true. The insurance was high, about 900 full coverage for six months. it was only a V6 but it did have some serious power. every turn i made in the rain caused the car to fish tail and any turn going faster than 15mph in the snow caused me to fish tail severely or spin out. Gas mileage was actually pretty good, i got 20 city and 24 highway. I'm not trying to talk bad about the car cuz i loved it and still own it to this day although it has had some major modifications. Bottom line is you will have TONS of fun with this car. just be super careful when it rains or snows (if it does in ur area)

I agree with Nascar guy. Mustangs are awesome! However, the insurance will be steep and depending where you live its not the best car for inclement weather. You obviously are looking for sporty. Maybe if you could find a car that is front wheel drive, 2 door with maybe a spoiler and moonroof to make it more fun for you?! If you are set on a Mustang, you might want to get the smallest engine for now and upgrade to a faster one later. And just a hint, stay away from the color Red ;)

Yes. The V6 version has decent power and also decent fuel mileage. The cars are for sale everywhere so pick the best one (well maintained and lowest mileage) your budget can stand. One more goody -- the V6 engine version looks almost EXACTLY like the V8's only the insurance is drasticly lower.

The 95 through 97 is good cars. But I would suggest an escort for the first car, I know you don't wanna hear that but for reasons like INSURANCE and fuel economy reasons it would be a whole lot cheaper.

I know your asking about thr 95 to 01 , but the 2006 has the traction control option. It's good for mud , snow and rain.I only have the v6 ,but my car doesn't spin out for nothing with the tc on.

yes. it would, my first car was ford contour, then and is now a mustang. hoping to trade in mine for a 2004 mustang V8. but yes to answer your question, a mustang in my opinion would be your best bet. American's number #1 favorite muscle car it's rated that you know.
