We live in a rural area on a dirt road. It is not a county maintained road and therefore not subject to the same care and laws. Sounds weird but, that is what the police told us since it is private. There are some oldrer boys (young teens up to early twenties) that terrrorize the neighborhood. They'll drive very fast and spit dirt/stones, speed up and down the road, and if you say anything to them you will pay! Today they spent the afternoon mud bogging on the road where it was quite wet from recent rains. The road is all torn up and the man everyone pitches in to pay for roadwork just graded it last weekend. The tire ruts are very deep and it is quite rugged. It would seem that the law is on their side. Who helps/protects the innocent?

I've had this same problem. Put up a "No Trespassing" sign at the end of your private road. When they show up again call the cops tell them you want the kids arrested for trespassing.

Well first and foremost, the "city" police may not be able to help because you live outside the city and it's outside their jurisdiction. But there is ALWAYS some law enforcement people with authority and just need to find out how it is ... it could be the County Sheriff or the State Highway Patrol .... look in the front of your phone book and there should be a listing for one or both of those offices. It's pretty sad that the local police wouldn't offer to help ... but if you literally have a PRIVATE road ... why not install a locking gate and only give keys to the people that access the road. Or if you don't want to do that, consider hiring a private security firm to flex a little muscle!

If it is a private road then someone owns it. Is it a company or like an oil lease road? Maybe that's one way to get the police out there. Find the person who owns the road, have them report to the police that some teenagers are tearing up their property, and then police will have to do something about it. Unless the one of the teenagers doing the damage is the sheriff's son or something (I'm from a small town too so I know how it works!) Good luck - I hope you can find someone to help before you resort to all the neighbors getting together with some 12 gauges and threatening those stupid boys.

Ok how many people live on that road get together and go to a town meeting, doesn't matter if the road is private, maybe you are responsible for the care, like snow removal etc, but no one has immunity against threats and so on.

Whoever told you this is not right, terrorism has many forms and you are being all being terrorized and giving them exactly what the bullies want POWER. Make a stink and stay united all owners or representatives therof should march into city hall and demand that this be resolved, and if they give you that crap, ask for it in writing or to show you where that is writen exactly, and if they are willing to accept the consequence of their glib attitude, like if one of your children get run over, it will only get worse if you don't act. Good luck bullies are bullies and if the behaviour isn't corrected as children then society inherits grown up bullies, get someone to video tape the bullies action and threats, this is not acceptable behaviour anymore.

Can you and the rest of the neighbors pave the road or install a camera to record 24 hours a day. The cops cant do anything about the road but if they catch them terrorizing the neighbors maybe they can do something then...

the police can intervene in an assault situation even on a private road right?

i would put some road spikes on the road at certain times of the evening and notify your other neighbors. and say oops. they would have no way of knowing who did it, maybe theyll get tired of flat tires. , play hard ball back they are already tearing the road up and being loud what do you have to loose and dont you all know someone in the police department who could help you . have you gone down there and filed a disturbing the peace report, are there animals that could be in danger because if there are then all you have to do is file a claim with the spca and they will send in a rescue team to check it out and file a citation or jail for the offenders, thats one way to start the ball rolling food for thought , good luck

Since it is a private road...I would pitch in for a gate that prevents anyone that does not live there to have access. It might take a while to get the funds together...but, it might be worth it. I would suggest an iron fence, as it will damage any car/truck that runs into it.

Also, you might try getting plate numbers and a video of the mayhem. You possibly could file a suit for property damage, as the road privately belongs to the residents...cite the police as your reference on ownership of the road.

Another outlet, is to get their tags, and find out who they belong to. Maybe they are teens that have parents at home...try talking to their parents. You might get somewhere, or not.

Good luck!

Call the DA's office, the sheriff's office and your local TV station and newpaper. Take pictures of the damage. If the media gets hold of it, the authorities will be shamed into doing something. Tell them that you pay your taxes and you are entitled to the protection of the police. A home is private property, too, but they can arrest a criminal in a home. If you can get the license plate numbers of their cars, you can take them and their parents to small claims court.

well, really the cops are lying to you. if it were a public road, the only thing they do illegal is speed. they would be able to "drive" through it when wet, whatever, as long as no laws r broke. buuuuuuut- you said you live on a private road. in that case, they are trespassing on private land. not only can you, or your neighborhood, get them for the tresspassing, but they also are destroying you road/property. which is also illegal. if you dont get ne results from the police, call, call and call agian.

The land that the road sits on is owned by someone. Find out who that is and have the police protect the owner from trespass. If it turns out that the county does actually own the land, the police are responsible.
