It's better to exercise 1.5 hours after your dinner so you will have enough energy to lift some weights. But dont exercise right after your dinner, you wont like what you will face (e.g. you can see what you've eat after go to your stomach. :)). And end the exercise maximum 3 hours before your sleeping time.
The best time for exercise is in the morning actually. have some light breakfast first, then go to the gym for 1-2hours excercise.

I read a book called LEAN BODIES, written by Cliff Sheats (I also bought his cookbook). He promotes the idea that if you eat MORE of the proper foods, you'll increase your metabolism, and burn more fat. He compared it to a car and fuel... if you stop giving your car gas, it'll eventually stop moving.
The body is the same way, and he saw significant results from clients who eliminated the crud from their diet, and started increasing their caloric intake (athletes do this).
As for exercise, his theory is that if you exercise 30-45 minutes or more in the morning BEFORE you eat anything, your body will need fuel to perform the exercises. And since you haven't eaten, it'll search for fuel in your fat stores.
So I tried it, and also used an exercise program of walking and resistance training (I have a bowflex). I switched off each day, and took one day off per week.
I lost almost 40 pounds in two months, I was never hungry (you have to eat every 3 hours in this food plan), and in fact sometimes I couldn't finish all the food I had to eat.
Good luck!

You are very underweight for your height. I hope that you are chowing down on good, healthy foods, such as fruits, veggies, grains, good proteins. It's more comfortable to wait about an hour after eating before you exercise. But it's good to eat a high protein bar before strenuous exercise. Especially in your case. You won't be able to be healthy and strong or defend yourself, unless you put on some weight.

You should exercise before. This is because your metabolism will be kicked up and when you go to eat,it will be burned quicker! Plus eating and then working out gives me cramps lol. Good luck=0) You are pretty tall for your weight. Honestly you should think about gaining a little weight. Try eating a little bit more carbs everyday and protein while you are exercising.

Well, my question is why would you wanna excercise like crazy? My answer is when you wake up in the morning you do a few stretches like bending over and stretching and such. Maybe after breakfeast run up and down the stairs (if you have any). Eat healthy is the #1 thing to do. and when your going home from school try walking but if your house to too far then try to ride a bike. That way you can use excercise as transportation.

Generally speaking... before. If you exercise within 2 hours after you'll feel like you're "swimming thru jello" as you feel lethargic.
Sports drinks are full of simple carbs (sugars, etc) that will fuel your body during the workout.

Burn more calories than you eat. Take in about 2000 a day.
Cut your fat intake.
Eat three cups of fat free low cal yogurt a day (make sure it has live cultures in it).
Do 45-60 min. of aerobic exercise a day (preferably before you eat in the morning).
Do 20 min of weight training three times a week.
You mentioned wanting to defend yourself. You may want to study martial arts as well.
Be Blessed

It depends on what type of excersising that you are doing. If you are doing weight training, then you need to wait atleast and 1 - 2 hours for foods eaten to process through your body. If you do light cardio (walking) after dinner, lunch, breakfast etc...would be okay. Any type of training should be done prior to eating. Drink plenty of fluids to keep your body hydrated.

Get yourself a DDR pad and game (they come for X-box as well as Playstations), and use the workout mode.
Or, walk/jog/run around the neighborhood with a friend or two...or maybe a family member.
Biking is good, as is swimming.
Just remember to get your heartrate up for at least 30 minutes a day, to good, prettymuch pounding level.

You are still an adolescent and your body is still growing. Don't eat junk foods as your main things to eat (stay away from the cookies, candy, sodas as snacks), keep eating fruits and veggies, and drink lots of water!! Keeping active, bike riding, running, other kinds of excercises of that nature are very good for you. Ask your parents to enroll you in football, basketball, baseball, karate, kickboxing....all these things are great excercise for young guy.
