OEM stands for original Equipment manufacturer (duh, I guess I"m a bit late)

An OEM company makes hardware. THE OEM Software is sold to them very inexpensively so that they can bundle it with the software. Many times these are 'evaulation' copies which don't work past 30 days, but they can give you an idea ofhow a piece of software works. OEM Software originally was full functioning software and was supported by the writer of the software as if it was a retail purchase.

It's been answered already quite adequately, but I can add a little more to help it make better sense.

An Original Equipment Manufacturer is one who makes a product that is actually sold by someone else.

In the case of software, Microsoft manufactures software that it sells for retail price, but it also sells that software to computer makers who install it on their computers, and then sell the computers to you. This is called "bundling."

OEM software is sold to resellers at a wholesale price, and the computer is sold to you as a set which includes the software.

Nero software is often "bundled" with DVD or CD ROM burners to make it easier to sell them.

BTW, OEM'ing has existed as a sales channel long before computers have been around. And it exists in many industries such as cars that are made by overseas companies (Japanese, Korean, etc.) and marketed by domestic automakers.

Regular consumer electronics are also often OEM'd, as are food products, cosmetics, clothing and virtually everything else.

When you buy a "store brand" or "no frills" product it is OEM'd by a larger company selling their surplus product.

OEM stands for Oeiginal Equipment Manufacturer, and usually refers to software, which is delivered with the hardware and special prices are negotiated for it.

Like all hardware manufactures are recommending Windoxs XP pro, but offering Windows Home with the product.

Original Equipment Manufacturer.

In the case of computer software, this basically means versions of software sold to people/companies that build machines to sell to other people.

It can also apply to hardware.

OEM versions don't usually come with all the things retail versions come with, but cost alot less.
