It is a 32 inch Panasonic CRT TV

Thanks for the answers. There is sound and a picture, but the colors are like huge circular rings. The center is kind of purple, then a green ring then a yellow ring, and washed out at the edges of the screen. All the colors are whacked out.

It would be a whole lot better if you describe the symptoms and appearance of the picture tube ie , is it blank ? Is it lit up bright ? is there any picture faded or otherwise ?. To answer your question though - how do I tell if the picture tube is bad ? the answer is you don`t unless you have got considerable experience and even then you need to know how to perform several tests to determine if your fault is due to a CRT fault or a fault with the circuitry that drives it . There is some good news for you though ! First ignore the first 4 idiots but DR House is correct when he says that the CRT rarely just goes out !!. Now the facts , The most common CRT fault is just old age where the picture gets dimmer and dimmer, if all three guns age evenly then the pic will retain correct colour balance, however often 1 of the 3 guns ages ( loses emission ) faster than the others, that's when you end up with a picture that is the wrong colour , for instance if the blue gun goes weak then the picture looks green, if the red gun goes first then skin tones take on a greenish colour etc. As you will have gathered by now there is no easy answer to your question , at least you now know more about CRTs than the first 4 idiots !. Hope this helps !!!

Television Picture Tube Problems

A picture tube itself doesnt normally go out. It may drop a screen gun and lose one of three colors but you will still see a picture. The only other thing that happens is the tube gets gassy but this takes some time and you will notice it gradually goes out. If you see nothing on the screen and it simply quit, it could be anywhere from the low voltage supply to the high voltage supply! In ANY event, TVs today arent worth repairing considering you can go buy a new 32 inch tv for less than 250 bucks!

What ever it is my gut feeling is that it is not the pic tube ! Since I have spent 40 + years solving such problems my gut feelings are usually correct !!. It could be as simple as bad solder joints on the CRT neck board . As in all cases however the advice is the same and that is to get a TV Tech to look at it and give you an idea of the cost ! if you try to turn on the set and it flashes like it is starting but quickly died to a rainbow caloped screen to black that is the high voltage area and that is time to buy a new tv set if the screen does not show the picture clear hum bars in the picture that is the audio section not the tube umm noting on the screen at all it is the tube and high voltage section or a broken grond wire on the tuner.
