i am getting some serious nightmares right before waking up..
like today it was me getting shot in the chest..
these have been happening for some times now, not everyday but atleast 3-4x a week and i ended up having a serious headache from the stess of the dream..
what could be causing this and is there something i can do before going to bed

thanks for the answers :)
i think the reason it stresses me out is b/c the dreams feel so real like this morning when i dreamed i was shot, i woke up and actually felt as if i was bleeding from the chest.. its like my body is feeling what i feel in the dream ..

You go through different cycles when you sleep and usually have a REM (dream) cycle before you wake up.
Why don't you try directed or lucid dreaming?

I have had friends with similar issues. You go through the Sleep stagesabout 6 times per night. This includes light sleep a moderate, REM which is where dreaming occurs and back out. Just before you wake, you can still be dreaming but also take in stimuli from your surroundings. This can include traffic, music and talk from the radio, thumping of neighbors. There is probably something of this sort "bleeding in" to your subconsious and is adding to your dream sequence. One guy I knew had a recurring night mare about 6 am every day of being chased by the police. It turned out that the bread delivery truck came to the cafeteria at the dorm at that time and the back up sound worked its way in as a siren. After he realized this, it went away.

how come it causes you stress?, its just a dream. go back to sleep. i actually had abad dream right before i was supposed to wake up this morning too. i dont remember exactly, but what i do know is that i was in kind of a paintball arena and only with real guns, with 1 man, who really wanted me dead. and i shot him in the face a few good times but he kept coming back, when i woke up i was quivering all over and if i would think about the dream i would quiver and shake and get cold chills some more. are they like that?

Sounds like you're stressed out. Dreams/nightmares are just manifestations of conflicts we have going on in our heads.
Try identifying whats stressing you out and try to find a resolution, that should make the nightmares stop.

You only remember the dreams you have right before waking up. You forget the rest. Maybe you are sleeping in too long.

You probably have them all night....you are just remembering the one right before you wake up. Either that, or you aren't sleeping long enough to get through that stuff. Good luck.

Just a little fun info :)
Dreams are actually only seconds long, but they can seem like hours.

sometimes i get em right before i wake up... it could be the body clocks way of dealing with the stress of knowing it has to wake up soon, that is one theory

Drinking or eating anything with caffeine or sugar before bed can cause nightmares.
