Hello all
The wedding is at 4PM, reception afterwards at the hotel.
I have a single breasted two button black suit I plan on wearing with some black wingtips. I dont want to wear a white shirt, I was thinking blue.

What kind of colors should I think of for the shirt and tie? Do I look for solids or patterns? Are the blue shirts with the white collars/cuffs strictly for business? What type of shirt (french cuffs etc.)? I figure I'll ask on here first, then its up to the guy/gal at Macys.

Thanks
Martin

A 4PM wedding isn't as formal as an evening wedding, soooooo

Solid color shirt, no blue with white cuffs, and probably no french cuffs. I wouldn't go with a button down collar either. You will want to look casual enough so that you are not the most formal dressed man there. At an afternoon/early evening wedding, the groom may be in a tux, but chances are that he will be wearing a suit himself.

If you get a blue shirt, it should be a deeper and more vibrant blue. Not dark, but no pastels. Sapphire, cobalt, royal blue... Something to stand out against the black. You shouldn't look like you are the groom, in the wedding party, or end up being overdressed.

That should put you off to a good start. Remeber to keep the tie basic if you want to wear one. Chances are that the men (including you) will be loosing their jackets after the ceremony. A tie that is very busy (loud colors, bold pattern) can look too overdone.

Some other color suggstions:
Burgundy
Wine
Plum
Emerald
Amethyst
Garnet

Martin - I'd pass on the blue shirt and french cuffs. I'd stick to a solid earth tone shirt- deep gold etc. with a patterned gold and black tie (dear God you will have a lots of choices there). Accessories should include a gold tone watch with a black leather band. Remember, you are the guest, not the groom and don't want to detract from the bride or groom

You can totally trust the people at Macy's! (usually)

For an evening wedding, I prefer solid colored ties and shirts. The white cuff thing is not so trendy right now, so it is not for social events. Blue shirts are always nice though whether it is a birds egg blue or more of a sapphire.

If you own cuff links that you like, wear them for sure!

With it being a fall wedding the blue wouldbe more winter. I would stick with the earth tones with the suite. The white cuff and collar will not flow well against the black suit. I guess to each his own. It's it what ever you are comfortable with.

I think blue would be just fine as long as its not the wedding party colors. I think a thin black tie with a nice tie tack to dress it up a bit.

The suit and any color shirt and tie you want would be great. Any color or pattern that is not undignified (sports team logos, cartoon charaters, etc) would be acceptable.

i think you should try a baby blue shirt with a gray stripped tie. That would look great! =)
