Basically it is for conservation. They help to protect endangered species in poorer countries, such as China, by facilitating the creation of national parks, working to reconcile the needs of nature with those of farmers, promoting nature conservation education, etc. And they provide education and raise funds in the West to increae awareness of the problem.
