Rachel Ray just did a show on Oprah yesterday in which she showed the best food for the cheapest buck in New York City. She recommended eating from teh carts on the streets. She showed on 5th avenue a bratwurst stand, she showed a barbecue stand in midtown, the best indian food (Masala Dosa) in Greenwhich Village by Washington Square, she showed a dumpling and lomein stand in Chinatown.
Also if you prefer a restaurant, the best places to go are the small little restaurants, in Little Italy or Chinatown. Also in Greenwhich village. Avoid the fancy restaurants, and look for the crowds waiting for a table. That is a good indicator.

I am not sure exactly what kind of cusine you are looking for.....You should go to the East Village, St. Marks place between 1st avenue- 3rd Avenue. There are lots of different cusine with affordable prices and awesome food. AND there are late night shopping, lots of cool bars, interesting shops...... can't go wrong. There is the first 24 hr food venting place (St mark's & 2nd avenue) just like in Europe & Asian that just open 2 weeks ago...should be a treat to check it out!

well, i can honestly say i know of only one (reasonably priced). becco restaurant (itialian food) located on 46th street between 8th and 9th. they have a great pre-fix menu honored at any time. the ambiance is warm and busy just like mom's kitchen. yet you can take a first date, family, or eat alone, for the first time and feel like you've always dined there. not to mention great food and as much as you like. good luck.

Asian food - Come to Flushing, not to Chinatown, that place is diiiirtyyyyyyy.
Non-Asian food - http://www.menupages.com/
That site mainly lists restaurants in Manhattan and Brooklyn, still a good site though.
