Compulsive overeating is a sign that something is wrong elsewhere in your life. For instance, a friend of mine ate tons when she was depressed, and the eating problem went away when the depression was treated.

My advice is to seek counseling, and get to the bottom of what is causing the overeating.

The best way to stop compulsively overeating is to make sure you eat regularly and eat foods that are not processed or high in sugar. Eating whole foods that take the body longer to digest will keep your blood sugar stable and you will not have the dips that cause the cravings.

That's the physical side of things. Many people who over eat compulsively do so for emotional reasons. There are many reasons for this and everyone is different so you would have to figure out why you might feel the need to keep shoveling food in even when you are not hungry. You wouldn't be alone in this that's for sure!

(1) Drink lots of water, especially right before your meal. If it's not easy for you to drink large amounts of water, try mixing it up with flavored powders that have no calories, like Great Value or similar.
(2) Prepare small meals, always rich in protein, and instead of going for your second plate...
(3) Eat gelatin made of agar agar (kanten) as dessert and drink more water immediately after you eat it. It has no calories and it triples its size because it absorbes water.
(4) Focus on your food. Do not watch TV or read a book while having your meal.
(5) Brush your teeth immediately after your meals.
(6) If you still feel "hungry" after all this... go out for a walk. Stay away from the kitchen!

If you think you genuinely have a problem, you should see a professional. You can go to your doctor and get on an appetite suppressant like phentermine, but you can only stay on that drug for 3 months at a time. If you think your problems might be psychological, you should probably see about talking to a therapist. If you don't think it's that serious, a group like Weight Watchers or LA Weight Loss can probably help you.

Don't buy and bring home foods that get you in trouble. Eat on smaller plates. Drink more water. Try to get more excercise. Don't eliminate all "bad" foods from your diet, you'll just resent yourself, eat them and then feel worse. Try to just eat smaller portions of those foods. Same w/ fastfood....don't supersize or value size...try kids meals or junior meals. And restaurants, share entrees w/ a friend etc. Share desserts w/ everyone at the table etc. It costs less and helps control portions. That's what I'm doing. Good luck! :)

Every time you go to eat (except important meals, breakfast, lunch, dinner.....) remind yourself that you shouldn't.
Eat more fruit, drink plenty of water or juice.
Go for long walks each day.

It's not as easy as it sounds, I know.

My mom used to eat too much, and weighed nearly 350 pounds.
I told her she should slow down, and she never listened.
Her doctor told her that if she didn't stop, she'd have serious problems.
My mom took my advice, and me and her would go for long walks each day. (she hated it, but it really helped)
Every time she wanted something to eat, I'd hand her an apple and I wouldn't let her eat anything else. (She hated that, too, but it helped a whole lot)
Whenever she wanted a soda/pop, I'd take it and hide it and give her some water or some juice. (she hated that a whole lot, but it really helped).
Now my mom weighs 190 pounds, and has been eating healthy for nearly a year and a half.
And she thanks me for helping her all the time.
^_^

Take laxatives. The gross factor and the pain will 'teach' your body to stop compulsive overeating and eat healthy.

I used to go days without eating as long as I had coffee and cigarettes. Now I just drink gallons of coffee because cigarettes got too flipping expensive.
