Pretend you are at the beach. The sun rises in the east. That would be toward the land. It sets in the west, which would be toward the Pacific Ocean.

sun sets on the west, rises on the east. Therefore on LA the sun rises opposite the ocean. so if you face the ocean turn around and there you are.
