You can't party with your friends if you're dead. There are less deadly ways of showing love.

Absolutely. There are a lot of ways to show love to others, but, to lay down your life for your friends sacrificially is the greatest act that can be done.

The Bible has alot to say about love. In fact, the Bible says that GOD IS LOVE. Yes, I believe what that verse you quoted says. Jesus loves us so much, that He laid down His very own life (came out of Heaven onto earth) AND suffered a horrendous death and took the punishment for our sins - all so that we could be alright in God's book (be redeemed) and go to heaven!!
That's our standard! There are many ways that we can show this in everyday, practical terms.

I'm confused....If you laid your life down for your friends, you would know that doing so would result in your death. Where do you draw the line between that and suicide?
Sounds like another of many biblical contradictions.

Yes, but in particular, I think Jesus was preparing his disciples. Especially in what was to occur on Golgotha.
