Really, most astronomers are PhD. candidates or professors under the "publish or perish" threat. There are very few positions open for astronomers outside of the educational arena.

I believe that most Astronomers go to school for the rest of their life... either taking classes or teaching them...

Astronomy takes a LOT of physics and mathematics...

today's Astronomers use computers almost continuously and they have programs that they have developed themselves so you would also need computer programming classes...

It is the perfect job for a professional student.
