Not all of them.

Lamictal is a new medication for Bipolar that claims no weight gain. The classic drug, Lithium, does not necessarily make you gain wait, but it requires drinking a lot of water. Some people retain the water ... and some weight.

I've been taking Lithium for Bipolar illness for about six weeks and have probably gained a couple pounds.

Yes,several medications for this disorder do have the side effect such as weight gain. Here are just a few in the class, Abilify, Clozaril, Zyprexa, Seroquel, Depakote and a few more. I am currently taking Seroquel for anxiety and it had given me more weight gain than I want. I am off of it and will not ever take it again. Neurontin also causes significant weight gain for some.
Check with your doctor if you are currently taking any of these medications. Do not stop any medication without your doctors approval. Take care!

You just asked a very good question. My experience has been that most Psychtropic drugs will make you gain weight, especially lithium because it has a lot of salt in it. I was on Klonapin for my nerves and gained fifty pounds. As soon as I quit taking it I dropped the fifty pounds off. It took a while though. My psychiatrist will always tell me what will make you gain weight before he prescribes it to me. If I know that I will have a weight gain with it then he will prescribe something else for it. So in answer to your question the answer is yes.

I put 60 pounds on with depakote. When I was being taken off of it and put on another. It was amazing I didn't feel as hungry and I noticed I ate half as much. I ended up having a reaction to the new med so I back on the depakote.

There are some anti depresants that actually help you loose weight.

Some definitely do. I have worked with clients who have especially gained weight from Zyprexa and amnitrytaline (anti depressant). I would suggest you do some research on meds and look at the side effects, then talk with your Doctor.

MY son doubled his weight when he was on Zypraxa and although he had good results we choose to take him off and switch. Abilify and Lexipro has been fine and no weight gain. Respidol was ok but the results werent as successful
