Well considering drs will prescribe an antidepressant to anyone who claims to be having a hard time with something or feeling a little blue I would say the percentage is scarily increasing everyday. General unhappiness is now being considered an actual mental disorder and instead of encouraging people to look at why they might be unhappy and how they can help themselves in a natural way it has become a fad to be on anti-depressants instead of people and society taking responsibility for their lives. And considering that general practitioners get very very little mental health training and they are the ones that diagnose about 95% of antidepressants things are getting out of control.
There are definitely some people who really need them and I have no problem with that. It's just scary how many people are given them when they don't need them. Sort of like all these kids with ADD who are given meds when they really just need more structure and consistent discipline.

I don't know that if that is true or not but there are a lot of people on anti-depressents and a host of other drugs. The amount of people that have been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder is very high and they have to take medications or they get sick again. The other half of the population is probably walking around on Vicodins for pain as they seem to be the most prescribed drug for pain.

I know it seems to be the way. I don't think it good, personally, what with them being addictive and causing some people to feel even more depressed if when they go off them...
I mean I do understand that some people really would benefit from them, but I also think that doctors are too quick on prescribing them to just about anyone who complains about being sad. I should know. When I was younger my doctor found out I was having depressing thoughts, and prescribed me an anti-depressant. My mom bought it and urged me to take it, but I refused 'cause of all of the stuff I'd heard about them. That was about 4 years ago, and I'm not sad anymore.

I'm guessing, for those that have insurance, 80% or more. For those without insurance, less than 5%. I'm guessing that, in the US, probably working aged people 60 to 70% who DO have insurance and millions that don't.
So, if you need anti-depressants, take them and do all the other stuff too (exercise, therapy, etc). Good luck!

I can't say for sure. My guess is about 40%. Prescription drugs seem to be yours for the asking, whenever you go to the Doctor, these days. If you see it on T.V. its's a sure bet that you can get it from your Doc.

....just antidepressants? Given for depression?
10 percent of people have depression, give or take some.
I'd guess around 20%, to give room for misdiagnoses.
