I was looking at military jobs at usmilitary.about.com and it says that if you ever served in the Peace Corps you cannot be in the Psyop or Intelligence. Why would they impose a regulation like that?

To avoid even the APPEARANCE of impropriety. The Peace Corps doesn't want host countries to think their volunteers are a front for the CIA, Army Intelligence, Naval Intelligence, etc. etc. The Defense Department has agreed to the restriction.

There is an old Chinese saying - don't stoop down to tie your shoes if you are walking through your neighbor's melon patch. It means that even if your heart is pure, don't do something suspicious.

Most host country nationals have a hard enough time wondering why someone would leave the land of fast cars, blonds in swim suits and easy living to teach Biology in an upriver secondary school. (An appalling number of HCN's get their information about the USA from TV shows; "Bay Watch" is still a big hit overseas.) If people routinely went into the CIA or Army intelligence from the Peace Corps, HCN's would doubt their motives even further.

Because you may have been unduly influenced while in the Peace Corps and your loyalties may be in question. This doesn't imply that they automatically assume that anyone who served inthe Peace Corps is not loyal to their country, but they don't wish to take any undue risks.

Additionally, if you have ever served in some other Foreign Nation's military service, you may be prohibited from enlisting in the US military as well.

Because you may have been unduly influenced by people in foreign lands that you dealt with in a way that would affect your judgement, such as working in heavily Muslim lands so that maybe you wouldn't be willing to do what's necessary in dealing with Muslims because you have a personal involvement with them at one time. Or perhaps also that being involved in the Peace Corps often helping those who only need help because they refuse to help themselves implies a softness and naive nature in you that would be a hinderance in Psyop or Intel.

You have been given some very good information, but also the reverse is true for the same reason. If you have ever held a high security clearance the peace corps will not accept you.

Because some of the places you may have been positioned with the Peace Corps could make it easy to identify you. Someone you knew may recognize you later and that pretty much kills your cover.

It probably has to do with getting a security clearance. If you have had contact with people from certain countries or worked there for any reason other than with the military, I think you can be disqualified from getting a secret clearance.

About.com is about the same as wikipedia...anyone can post anything. There is no such policy. It is called Intel by the way. The ad you saw was inaccurate.
