My friend has a colt vista wagon, 4x4. When she shifts into 5th gear, it seems to stay in 4th. RPMs and speed do not change. also, her back-up lights dont work. is this an electrical thing, or is it the 5th gear servo?

if it was a servo, wouldnt it just be like having it in neutral?
thanks for help, i dont know anything about Dodge...lol

I would just like to point out that a Dodge Colt is a re-badged Mitsubishi. Just wanted to straighten out the record before anybody got the idea that Dodge makes inferior transmissions......oh, wait.......

The Vista 4x4 has a vacuum solenoid operated 5th gear. The problem is usually the control solenoid on the transmission, or the nut has come off the transmission input shaft which prevents 5th gear from engaging. There are other possible causes, but these two are the most common. A competent trans shop should be able to tell if the solenoid is functioning. The solenoid is not expensive to repair. However if the vacuum solenoid IS working, then the input shaft nut has probably failed. This is more expensive and the shop cannot re-use or repair the old nut or input shaft because it will fail again. You must insist that the trans shop install a NEW input shaft and a NEW nut. The nut must be torqued to factory specifications and properly staked. If this is done properly, the trans will be almost bullet proof.

manual trannys don't have shift servos everything is controlled by you. if any thing it could be that one of the syncros is bad which would make it hard to get into the desired gear. Or maybe the shift linkage could need adjusting.

sounds like a tranny problem, try checking the fluid and maybe changing the tranny filter... then about the back up lights, i would start with fuses, there are some under your dash and some under the hood...

good luck
