There is a room with no windows.
There is broken glass on the floor.
There is a puddle of water an the floor.
Jan and Dan are dead on the floor.
What happened?

Jan and Dan are fish
the broken glass is from a fish bowl or aquarium that's why there's water on the floor
they died because too long outside the water

Jan and Dan are fish in a fish bowl with water and then the bowl fell on the ground and now there is water and broken glass on the ground from the fish bowl.Now Jan and Dan are dead because they have no water.

The fish tank fell and the glass went SPLAT! Jan and Dan have no water so they can breathe. And now the water is everywhere. Poor fellows

i know its the fish tank answer, but here's my original answer.
Jan and Dan commit suicide. they drink some orange juice before they hang themselves. THen they throw the glasses across the room and it shatters. They hang a noose and put themselves in it. They stand on top of a block of ice. Once the ice melts, Jan and Dan are left hanged to die.
I know its kind of depressing, but i read it in a riddle book once.

Jan and Dan had a glass of water, dropped it on the floor and slipped on the water and died. That's the best I can come up with!
