Two days ago, I noticed that my kitten had some dark brown/blackish stuff on the side of one of his nostrils. I tried my best to look at it but couldn't tell if it was dirt or "crust". I saw that he also had some inside of his nostril. This morning, I was able to clean some of it...it looks a bit like a scab. This evening, I'm noticing a bit on both his nostrils and inside. He's also known to have crusty eyes, not all the time but often enough.

Is there any way to tell if it's just food, dirt, or if it is an infection?

Wondering if anyone has had the same experience? I don't want to panic and take him to the vet for no reason.

It sounds like an upper respiratory infection... Take him to the vet. It is very common but if left untreated can become very serious.

Dark brown/blackish stuff? That sounds like dried blood to me. Either he stubbed his nose or something gave him a nosebleed. The crusty eyes...is that unusual or just sleepy eye crust? If it's not sleepy eye crust you might want to get that checked out. Also, if that nose doesn't clear up soon, you might want to take a trip to the vet. It could just be a scratch or something, or maybe there's something wrong in the sinuses.

My kittens nose gets crusty on the sides sometimes as well, I just clean it off. I saw the vet do this to her when she went for her shots, and she said its is just crust, like we get dry mucus (for lack of a better word). The same with the eyes, unless he is bleeding or the crust is hindering his breathing, i wouldnt worry.

It does sound like an upper respiratory infection possibly. If he's happy and eating and drinking well, then it can run it's course. If he isn't feeling well, then a trip to the vet for some medication to help him feel better is a good idea.

Call the vet, but don't panic. They may be able to give you a reasonable response to keep an eye on it and use xyz and see what happens. if it doesn't clear up or gets worse then bring him in to be seen.

He may have clogged tear ducts. (the tear ducts and nose are connected) My cat had this issue and I used a trick that I learned when my own child had this problem. I gently massaged the area below his eye next to his nose. Within a few days it cleared up.

If your cat sneezes at all he probably just has a stuffy nose cause my cat was sneezing a lot for about a week and his nose was just plugged but after a while it cleared up with no medication.
