Paul, Saul in Hebrew was a missionary apostle for the Gentile Christian. Judaism was divided into two groups, the Pharisees and the Saducces. Paul was a Pharisee, a strict constructionist of the Judaic laws, such as circumsicion. Formerly, a persecutor of the christian church, he died a christian martyr. After he acknowledged that Jesus is the Christ, he formed several christian congregations along his journeys thu Asia Minor and Greece, and eventually Rome.
Paul's epistles or letters to several Roman churches, along with the Acts of the Apostles form fundamental sections of the New Testament. Moreover, he is considered as the main author of the Bible. That's why you hear a lot of quotes or verses asserted to his writings.
His efforts to advance Christianity among the Gentiles for which he is considered to be a significant source of early church doctrine.,has been subject to various interpretations. Traditional christianity asserts that Paul's teachings are in complete harmony with the teachings of Jesus. Whereas the traditional theologians view the ministry and writings of Paul as the key to Biblical interpretation.
This line of interpretation holds that the four canonical Gospels and non- Pauline epistles apply only to the pre-Pauline Jewish church rather than the predominantly Gentile churches of today. Remember the Bible has been written and translated several times over.
Jesus Christ is God. He is the Son of God, or the Word of God. He comprises one of the three persons in the Holy Trinity:God, the Father, God the Son, and God, the Holy Ghost or Spirit. I hope this simple explanation help you get less confused about this impt religious issue regarding St. Paul. By the way, he is considered a prophet by the mormons. St. Paul, Minneapolis is named after him.

Paul is not God. He was an evanglist who had been through a dramatic conversion experience and began preaching the gospel. Paul was formerly named "Saul" and was on his way to Damascus to persecute Christians when he was spoken to by God and converted. Then he became a preacher of the gospel, wanting to share it with any who would listen. Jesus, on the other hand, IS God. Jesus and God are two parts of the holy trinity, God the Father, the Son (Jesus) and the Holy Spirit.

The letters that Paul wrote that made it into the Bible are inspired by the Holy Spirit who was overseeing Paul's writing and so while they are not devoid of his personality, they have the same authority as what Jesus said when it comes to doctrine.
2 Peter 3:15 And count the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you according to the wisdom given him, 16 as he does in all his letters when he speaks in them of these matters. There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures.
2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.
2 Peter 1:20 knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone's own interpretation. 21 For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

Paul, who by the way never knew Jesus, is the de facto founder of what we think of as Christianity. He seems to have won handily in his faction fight with Peter. On the other hand, without Paul it's hard to tell if the group that loosely orbited around the teachings of Jesus would have left the Judaic fold. They might have become just one more Jewish tendency- which would certainly have been more in keeping with my reading of the Gospels.

Jesus is God. Pal was an Apostle. Paul never made any claims to divinity for himself.
