I am the youngest child in a family with four siblings. I'm having the hardest time reclaiming my self-esteem and inner power. I feel like my family doesn't respect my time and privacy. Nobody cares if I have a life (studying, going out, etc) or have a boyfriend because they constantly interrupt me or expect I give up what I have to do for them. If I say no, I feel the guilt trip coming. I'm pegged as the shy one, the one who never speaks up, etc. They have been reinforcing this image in my life the longest time. I feel like my power is being drained. I'm hoping to move out soon--way overdue (I'm 33 yrs old), but will it really change things? What is a good remedy to show my family once and for all--I'm not a kid! I can be a powerful person too!

I know at my age that is unusual. I guess for emotional and financial reasons. After my dad passed away I stuck around with my mom a little longer than I intended. My dad left her with a lot of debt and we are helping her through this. It just gets to me sometimes. It's feeling burdensome. I really just want to move on with my life.

Boy does that ever hit home! I am the youngest of three sisters, and they have treated me exactly as you described. 33 and still at home? Goon-head!!!! The greatest independence you can ever achieve is when you move out. Do it now!!!!!!!!!!! Not just to show them that you can make it, but to show yourself. You already know that you can, so go ahead. You'll never believe what a sense of peace and freedom you'll gain. Do things your own way. Develop your own personality, no longer acting so as to please them. I don't mean to thwart them, just go out on your own and handle things as you see fit. Shrug off the guilt trip, if you can. I was also pegged as the shy one, but quite the reverse was true. They will respect you for getting out on your own. And you will love yourself for it. You haven't experienced life yet, until you're on your own. Good luck!

if you can't make it on your own right now, gradully get yourself where you can slowly but surely move on with your own life. Your old enough to and really should be mature enough to be out on your own. You need to care even if it seems that no one else does. Take the challenge and you will see just how strong your are. Youngest doesn't mean weakest .

By not living home at the age of 33!! If all of your siblings are still living at home and you are the youngest....what is wrong with this picture?? This really doesn't make sense to me.....because none of you are kids, but still not independent enough to leave. Why don't you show all of them you are reclaiming your entire life by doing what all of us do..........leave home and make one of your own.

What are you still doing living at home? Of course it will change things! Speaking from the point of view of a parent, if you're still living in my house, you're still a kid! If you want to have privacy and be treated like an adult, act like one and MOVE OUT!
