You do nothing in most cases, it's just something that happens.

Cataracts are opaque lenses that may develop due to genetics, old age, diabetes and many other causes. If this is something caused by a disease, you need to treat the underlying cause first. Sometimes the vet may recommend eye surgery, but this is rare, usually not something done locally (here, pets go to the University for treatment) and VERY expensive.

Dogs can live with this, it is not going to kill them. If it is age related, sometimes leaving a night light on at night or not moving the furniture can help the dog to not run into walls or furniture.

There is nothing, as far as I know, to prevent cataracts. If your dog gets cataracts, and you want them removed, you have to go to a veterinary eye specialist for the surgery, and it is expensive, anywhere from 800 to 1000 per eye. Sometimes they will discount it if you get both done at once, but dogs don't always get them in both eyes at the same time.

Call a vet...they have laser treatment for humans now, they may have something for animals too, as simple as drops.
