Citalopram (Celexa) is an oral selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) used to treat depression. Like all SSRI drugs, it causes xerostomia (dry mouth). Dry mouth can occur because clomipramine reduces the amount of saliva produced. Less saliva means problems for teeth. Saliva is a very important as it contains a number of ingredients which help to fight the bacteria that form dental plaque and cause decay and gum disease. The combination of reduced saliva production and bad oral hygiene can lead to an increased rate of tooth decay. Inform your dentist about Celexa so they can watch more closely for tooth decay and try to prevent or correct it.

Celexa and many other antidepressant medications cause the user to have a dry mouth. I would say that this is what has happened in your case. A dry mouth causes changes to the bacteria in your mouth and it also inhibits the protective actions of saliva. You are at increased risk of developing decay.

antidepressants often cause dry mouth. having an overly dry mouth causes an overproduction of (bacteria?) that can harm teeth. for the previous answerer, that is also why meth causes rotting teeth. i take antidepressants and have dry mouth ALL the time. i always have a drink with me, and chewing gum produces saliva. i recommend sugarless gum and water or sugar free drinks since sugar can rot teeth too.

In addition to three excellent answers above this one, might I suggest that you look for various Biotene brand products in the pharmacy. They are available over the counter and they aer useful in providing some relief from the symptoms of dry mouth.
You could also ask your dentist to put you on a home fluoride treatment. This is a gel with 0.4% stannous fluoride that you apply once a day and it REALLY helps cut down on cavities in patients with dry mouth.
