how long do you wait before asking someone to either homecoming or prom?

I don't think you have to wait. If the event's coming up and you're good friends with the person, I'd just go for it and see where it goes from there! Good luck!

Don't wait too long or the one you wish to ask may already have accepted an invitation by someone else!

you don't wait. You get that date locked in asap....the ones who wait are the ones who miss getting in there first. Think like a sperm, first one there gets the egg!
The time you should give in cancelling it for a better date is 2 months. Beware, you could be the dumped!

I would give them 3 weeks notice so this way us girls can get our hair and dress together LOL if its a guy ask him a week before good luck to you and have fun
