What you see as being personal, others may not. After I've known people for a short while, I ask all sorts of questions. But none really too personal. Great friendships are formed by people getting to actually know each other. Let you guard down, start communicating with people. What's to hide? The behavior you describe is kind of like having a wall to block people out of your life. Research it and see for yourself!
