In addition to what has been said, in Spanish (NOT in Mexican, which isn't a language), ALL nouns are either masculine or feminine, including nouns that refer to inanimate things. In these cases, you need to learn the gender along with the word itself. So, for instance "mesa" (table) is feminine, so "the table" would be "la mesa". But "sol" (sun) is masculine, so "the sun" would be "el sol". The distribution of genders is rather arbitrary, and although each gender has characteristic endings, there is often nothing to let you know what gender a word is.

Masculine the = El
Feminine the = La
Depends upon gender in spanish or Mexican.
Example Lobo means wolf.
Female wolf is La Loba.
Masculine wolf is El Lobo.

It can be say El or La when singular.
If plural then you would say Los or Las.
Also depending on the gender, you would say "la chica" for "the girl and "el chico" for "the boy" same rule applies to nouns and pronouns.

It depends on whether the noun you're referring to is masculine or feminine and whether it's singular or plural.
Examples:
f=feminine, m=masculine
calculadora (f)--LA calculadora (CALCULATOR)
mundo (m)--EL mundo (WORLD)
cajeros (m. pl)--LOS cajeros (CASHIERS)
mujeres (f. pl)--LAS mujeres (WOMEN)
With singluar feminine nouns, you would use "la."
With plural ones, you would use "las."
With singular masculine nouns, you would use "el."
With plural ones, you would use "los."
I hope this helps.
