I'm 54, almost 55, and I can tell you that the belt I got on my butt did me so much good it's incredible. Not that I'm the most "likeable" guy in the world, and not that I still didn't grow up breaking more rules than I'd've liked to as I look back, but just think what I could've been like had someone, the greatest man I ever knew: my dad, not taken the belt or his big hand to my butt and let me know just how wrong he thought my behaviors were. You and I, sir, know the value of such discipiline, that the wusses and whimps of the newer generations or the sissier families will never know. And I'm a very sensitive and loving man, father and husband, and I was a Social Worker for 20+ years, and addressed these issues in a professional manner, sad to say, since the whimps and wusses ruled the profession, and still do. It's great to meet a man like you. We're a good bunch of guys and there's a whole lot more of us in the world who may not have lived a "politically correct" type of life, but lived a better one for that very reason. God Bless you.

I think corporal punishment is a great idea--but it should have much wider usage!
If we keep it up long enough we could have all people trained to use it as problem solver and social skill--then we can apply it to everyone! If your brother-in-law is rude at dinner, you should of course spank him. And if your wife talks back you should logically beat her with a cane. Because after all, what is good for the least of us is good for the greatest, and as we do unto our children we should do unto ourselves. And I mean really, when it comes to teaching your son that it’s bad to hit, nothing drives home the message like hitting him. It gives him valuable skills…skills that, if used against any adult, would put him in jail.
Yours,
Irony

I'm a big dude and could probably beat the $hite out of most people...would that be a good way to get my way and 'teach' people a lesson?
All corporal punishment does is teach the victim that violence holds the upper hand - shall we go back to the law of the jungle, or shall we try to progress as a race?

Unless the child has some sort of medical issue, the parents lack of fair, but firm training can very easily be the cause. If a child believes he can get away with something, he will go for it. Teach them right from wrong and respect for others, and they will probably turn out to be fine adults.

......Yep I agree with you, caning did me no harm and taught me to respect authority. Consider; its seems that Kids have lost respect in the last 20 years, about the time this type of punishment was stopped??? Bring it back, and so the respect will return too.

the cain is the reason why there is no cain anymore because of it everything has gone from one extreme to the other ,there are so many dogooders now rather than punish people who commit crimes we just let them out early ,what these people dont seem to understand is that this just feeds the problem and willl find it even harder to find places in prison for criminals in the future as they feel the risks are worth taking and crime will rise why the hell cant we set examples of people that we catorgoricaly know have commited offences, any way with courts terrorists assylum seekers and tonyblair it looks like were fuked .

The thing about corporal punishment is that the benefits of it have never been proven to be harmful or beneficial.
The effectiveness of corporal punishment is often dependent on the philoophy of the parent and temperment of the child.

actually, 87% of Americans hit their kids, so it's likely that one of these kids you think is bad is being hit. in fact, kids who are hit have the worst behavior. the key is not to only not hit - it is to guide, with respect, intelligence, and humility, the children in one's care.
Getting hit did hurt you. It hurt you then and it hurts so much now that you are willing to have more kids experience the pain - just to excuse that your parents did this terrible thing.

you dont have to hit the out of control kids. most are like that because they dont even get the basic love or attention at home. try giving your kid a hug or spending some time with them and it will work out better than the future child abuser you'll raise.
