Immigrants came here for oportunity.
Many European countries had cultures that didn't allow people to get ahead, even if they worked hard. So hard working people came to the US.
Also many people came for rights like religious freedoms that weren't tolerated in Europe.

Some were puritans who came to establish a society based on their religion (now Massachusets, Rhode Island, Conneticut) Some were people coming to make money (Virginia, South/North Carolina, Georgia, Maryland) and some just came because it was nice and the land was next to free (Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Delaware)
