i've heard that you can use a very fine grade of sand paper to get rid of nics & scratches on cds. is this true? can you give proof of it?

Cd's are encoded and then have a layer of protection over the encoding. When a scratch occurs you may be able to get rid of it by using a polish. Even the finest sand paper can be harsh. They have a polish for that. Go to you local cd store and ask when you can get the polish.

Oh man I wish I saw this question earlier. I just used a sand blaster on my Tool CD, and well, it really sounds bad now.

i bought a scratch removal kit for c.d's and sandpaper ( a few different grits) was in it, as well as a couple grits of polishing paste. you can buy plastic polish for airplane windsheids that works pretty well, too
