everyone has their own idea of a good virus checker try out a few and then select the one you think works best.
Zone alarm suite is a good one and covers you for a firewall, virus checker and spyware and it updates itself. AVG 7.0 is a free one from Grisoft and can be updated. There are also Macfee, Panda antivirus titanium, Kaperspy antivirus and Norton

I personnally prefer to use zonealarm and avg
you can get avg free from www.grisoft.com

I use F-Secure www.f-secure.com because they have one of the fastest response times in the industry for new virus definitions and because they send out updates often daily. I have run this program in its various versions for 4 years now and have never been infected. In addition, my boss used it to manage anti-virus for a college intranet of over 300 computers and it was the only program that was easy to work with, both on the client and server level.

F-Secure has a beta version out right now, and when I signed up for the beta test, I got a discounted rate for the full release version.

Good luck!

Norton Antivirus, or norton system works. Both program gets you the best for your buck, and also are rated #1 in the world. So definently a great buy. Just make sure before you install any of them, that you uninstall any other antivirus first.

norton is absolute crap. they are NOT number 1 in removing viruses, look at any pc magazine benchmarkk. they just happen to be the most used but they are definitely not the best.

for pay programs, mcaffee is better but not by much.

AVG or avast are the best ones and are free
