Typically pinto beans, though Michigan (great northern) beans and kidney beans are often used in chili.
If you're making chili and want to know what kind of beans to use, use anything you want or have on hand - most bean varieties don't really taste that different from each other - using a mix varies the texture and adds color.

Although all of these answers are right you may be asking regarding "chili beans" written on the label. Read the label first to make sure that the beans don't already have seasonings added to them if you are going to be using them for something other than your chili or if you want to season it just the way you want.

chili bean = pink bean Notes: These are very similar to pinto beans, only they're smaller and rounder. They're often used to make chili and refried beans. Substitutes: pinto bean OR rattlesnake bean OR red kidney bean

Classically, it is a Pinto Bean, but red beans or kidney beans are commonly used as well. I personally prefer to use black beans.
