My chihuahua is epileptic and requires daily meds which are fairly inexpensive. Other than her meds and once in a while check-ups and blood tests, she doesn't see the vet. So, I'm wondering if it's really necessary to purchase insurance for "in case" purposes.

I think the company we're with, Pets Best, has accident-only insurance that starts at just $6/month so that you're covered in case of an emergency.

We have both the accident and illness coverage so that if our Aussie gets sick we can take him down and get the help we need without having to worry about the bill. (We opted for the lower deductible and pay a few more dollars a month.)

I've just heard too many stories of vet bills that can run in the thousands of dollars not to think that pet insurance is not a good deal. (But I also think you have to be careful when choosing a company because some companies will only pay a small portion of the bill, which doesn't really help when you need it to.)

We haven't had to use it with our Aussie yet, but we spent quite a bit of money on one of our last dogs, and I'm glad we won't have to try to shell all that money out again without getting some back.

I think that the top reasons pets end up at the veterinarian are usually because of accidents or things like cancer (which can't be foreseen). I think it's always a good idea.

Best of luck!

Your pet has a previosly diagnosed medical condition. You can buy the insurance, but it will not cover anything for the epilepsy, or any another problems that arise because of this condition. The pet insurance is a good thing if you get your dog every little thing they need medically, vaccines, flea and heartworm, dentals, or anything else. It also will cover portions of trauma, or accidents that happen to your pet. If you only have one dog, and the monthly premiums are not a problem for you, then get it if you want. Most people I know that have it don't get much use out of it though.

My pet insurance (VPI) has literally saved me money. It's not a scam either to the woman who thinks we should put our pets down for caring about them like a family member.
Insurance will also cover routine vaccines, bloodwork, spay/neuter, micro-chipping, testing, dental work, emergencies, medicine, flea/tick meds, and heartworm meds. I have a bullmastiff and black lab that I have it on. It has been well worth every dime I have paid. I probably have gotten more back from them than I have paid into them.
It's well worth having. You never know what will happen. And when we take in a pet, we are promising to care for it, as it can't care for itself that way.
Good luck.

It has always sounded like a good thing to me. Here in LA we have some doctors who take a "sign up" fee & it acts like an insurance policy. After you pay it, all of your needs are addressed in a very discounted way or free.

Pet insurance is a scam. It simply exists for people who feel that they need to treat their animals just like a family member. Whenever an animal becomes too expensive to care for, it should be put down.

puppy coverage is like maximum insurances in that in case you do no longer use it then you relatively won't see the fee in it yet once you wait to purchase it till some thing is going incorrect, you will relatively wish you will possibly have offered it quicker (because of the fact it won't conceal pre-modern issues/matters). Do you think approximately it to be a waste of money to insure your place, your automobile or your self? in case you do, you probable won't think of puppy coverage is a deal, till your puppy is clinically determined with maximum cancers or kidney failure or some thing else with a great scientific bill which will make you such as you will possibly have taken it out quicker. i think of that maximum people who purchase puppy coverage are like me and function had great scientific costs interior the previous (and/or lost a puppy because of the fact of scientific costs they could no longer have sufficient funds) and don't % to could be confronted with that on my own lower back. I incredibly tend to respectfully disagree with Robyn in that i've got conventional canines who've been via maximum cancers remedies/surgical operation who're now residing and happy and function heard of alternative pets whose vendors could have placed them down if it hadn't been for the coverage. basically because of the fact a puppy is dealing with a great vet bill does not propose that they could be "extra useful off" being euthanized. it is too straightforward for me. From what i've got examine, however, it is substantial to purchase the coverage whilst they are youthful, earlier issues start to look themselves so as that each thing is roofed. despite if, now that I say that I comprehend that throughout the time of spite of older canines/cats who have already got issues, it does not propose that some thing catastrophic like maximum cancers won't happen. i won't be able to think of every physique who does no longer have wanted they had taken out the coverage then. with a bit of luck i will under no circumstances could use the coverage for my pup, yet i be responsive to that if i could that it is there (and because he's a mixed breed and youthful just about each thing would be coated). it is a great alleviation off of my shoulders from my final canines (who I omit extraordinarily and want i might had the coverage to maintain going forward with maximum cancers remedies). desirable of luck to you!
