I already have the os. I need the programs that i can run on it.

The best place to start is with your Linux Distributuion. Most distros include plenty of software like web browsers, e-mail clients, editors, etc. Look on your install CDs or on the distro's ftp site.

If you need office applications, I recommend Open Office. www.openoffice.org

Also, many linux projects are hosted at SourceForge. www.sourceforge.net

It really depends on which OS package you have. Linspire has something called ClickNRun which is the easiest to use.
SuSe has Yast2, which lets you "check for updates" and do a search for programs.
Otherwise, you can go to http://www.linuxquestions.org and ask some experts.

yum is one update manager for fedora
yum instal
this works for linux programs
in case u need to run windows apps
wine is another way to go
