I have always been fascinated with the desert ever since the first time I saw "Lawrence of Arabia." T.E. Lawrence wrote much about the effects the desert had on him in his classic, "The Seven Pillars of Wisdom." Now that I have lived in a desert, I can say it is a harsh, demanding, ruggedly beautiful environment. No where else is the fraily of life more starkly revealed. The desert scoured my inner life like nothing else. It is within me, but it is not some place where I can live, much less find peace.
Now, I live in a little town in a small valley nestled in the mountains. It is raining today and my little town is quiet, not even the dog three houses down is barking. The mountains speak to me in my dreams of many things; they pull me to them almost by magnetism. In fact, this is the first place I have ever lived that has almost completely quenched my love of the road. I have always loved to travel, but now I find it hard to leave my little valley just for a 45 minute trip up the road to the next town.
The only thing I lack here is the ocean. I grew up by the ocean. The great mother ocean was always of the east, of the new day, and just beyond her horizon, was the mother of humanity, Africa. Now, I am in the West. And the Great Mother is the mother of the west, of nightfall, and of the bliss of dreams. I hope someday to live on the coast because here in the northwest, there are many places where one can rest in the meeting place between mountains and ocean. In point of fact, there are NOT nine oceans or however many the bean-counters say; there is only ONE great ocean and she embraces all of our shores equally.
The desert is a place where one must go to discover what is most essential in oneself; but give me the mountains and the ocean for healing and for peace. Namaste.

This is a tuff question for me. I live in the foothills of the great smokey mountains. In fact the hiking trail starts in my city and goes all the way to Maine. Yes, about 1400 miles. And there is the beach, the Gulf of Mexico just four hours away by car, in other words a tank of gas. I lived in the San Diego area for ten years and could leave the city at 78 degrees and drive for about an hour and end up in Alpine with 18" of snow on the ground.
Then there is the dessert Southwest..Phoenix, Scottsdale, Paradise valley. I wish I were there. Just cannot afford that area, but have many friends there...

I love the desert with all the wide open spaces! The mountains are a close second. Of course, I live in Georgia...north of us are mountains, but no desert! LOL Peace and love to you, too!

I enjoy them all the same. I enjoy snow skiing and biking in the mountains, swimming and surfing at the beach, hiking and camping in the woods, and off roading and camping in the desert.

The mountains are so peaceful, isolated, private, and nothings better than sitting near a fire with the person you love on a cold winter night. Just my thoughts.

I enjoy the beach where it's peaceful and calm. It is where you can see God's magnificent nature and beauty. It is where you can swallow up all your stresses. This is where I love to get away to see the waves, have fun and do sand castles with my family. It is where you can see the waves crash as unique shells and starfishes.
