In a nutshell a Virus is a self replicating molecule. It reproduces itself using the DNA of its host.

In the inert state the virus is inside a minute cylindrical casing with a bulb at the end. This casing attaches itself to your body cell and the Virus molecule crawls out of it and wreaks havoc in the cell. It uses the DNA inside the cell to make duplicates of itself.

Colds, Influenza and HIV are examples of human illnesses brought on by Viruses. Viruses are difficult to treat and usually have to run their course. In the case of colds and flu you recover because your immune system starts attacking the virus molecules by producing white blood cells that devour them.

Viruses of illnesses such as colds and flu can survive on surfaces such as doorknobs. That is why it is important to wash your hands frequently if you are under the weather with these illnesses. HIV on the other hand can only be transmitted through the exchange of bodily fluids, ie sexual contact or the sharing of hypodermic needles.

Everyone who answered the question previously is wrong. A virus is a non living protein shell, sometimes an outer capsule, with genetic material inside, single stranded DNA, double stranded DNA, ssRNA, and dsDNA. The virus needs a host to replicate by using the host cells' proteins such as DNA polymerase a and helicase, ligase, and RNA primers in order to replicate its own DNA.

A virus is technically a non living piece of RNA strand. When it invades a living cell, it 'takes over' the cell and begins to replicate itself using the materials within the cell.
