I think that growing up we had Vicks on our chests 24/7, but there are other things to try if you don't feel it's safe at the age, you can out it on he inside of the pajama shirt, this way it doesnt have so much contact with the ski, Aslo there is a very cheap vicks vaporizer available at drug stores and then buy the Vicks Liquid that pours into the little slot ontop, you can also use a little of this in warm bathwater, if the baby is really congested before bed, run a hot only shower in the bathroom, sit with the baby on the toilet and have him breath the steam for 15 minutes or so, this will break up the congestion and help him sleep better.
These are all really simple tricks that really work But, I think you can put vicks on a child as long as they are over 6 months old! Good luck

Absolutely. I have a 17 mos old as well and have been using vicks on her since she was about 10 mos. It has helped to keep her nose clear at night. I also use a steamer that emits warm air and put Vicks in the steamer as well.

My mom used to put Vicks on my chest when I was little but they're saying now that it's not safe as it can cause the illness to get worse. The best thing is to give him his medication and lot's of liquids to drink. Rest is the main thing he needs but be careful of the Vicks. If in doubt, please call his Dr. Only his doctor can give you the best advice.

Yes you can put vicks on his chest on his neck. under his arm pits. and on his back.. anywhere he can't get his hands on it and rub it in his eye.
he will be just fine.. they also have them little vicks plug in things so that you can put it right next to his bed so that only the vapors of it get to him if that will make you feel better.
but vicks never hurt any of my kids and they all grew up to adult hood.
hope he is feeling better soon

They actually have vicks for babies. Called vick babyrub and can be used on babies 3 monthes and up. You should find it with the other vicks but maybe in the baby medications. I got mine at walmart.

Speak to your doc, but yes (most of the time) it is okay. They make "baby Vics" for little ones that isn't as strong as the normal stuff. We use that for our daughter. It does appear to offer some assistance with breathing at night.
Other helpers - humidifiers (cool mist are best - nothing for little curious ones to be scalded with), children's tylenol/motrin/Advil (all offer the relief for fever and aches that accompany colds). Something to elevate the head (even slightly) helps with decongestion as well. We use a regular size, flat adult bed pillow. It is too large to shift around the bed, and it offers some elevation for relief of decongestion without too much elevation to be uncomfortable or abnormal for our daughter. Other than that, you will have to wait things out. . .
