If you pay he'll be very appreciative and feel he owes you something. The result of that is he'll like you a lot more and as for the rest of the evening he'll likely to offer to pay for everything else if you guys are planning on doing something. If the club was the only thing you had planned then he'll probably take you out the following week to a pretty good place to eat since he wants to show his appreciation for the tickets. Not just b/c he wants to pay you back.

I think if you invited him, and your family members are going to be there, than you should buy the tickets. He should offer to give you the money or at least split it, but you shouldn't accept it. Let him but a round of drinks at the club or something during the night. But treat him to the tickets, he'll be impressed that you took the initiative to plan the evening.

If you offered to take him, then you pay. If it was "my family's going to a comedy club, would you like to come along?" then it's up to you to follow up his "yes" with "tickets cost $25 (or whatever)" so he knows he's expected to pay his own way, or "I'll pick up the tickets, but everyone's buying his own food (or drinks, or...)".
Turn it around - if he asked you to go under similar circumstances, how would you feel if he asked you to pay for your ticket, or dinner, or whatever? That should tell you the plan.

OK, you asked him out ? You Pay......
If he is a gentleman, he will offer or insist on paying for them.
You them say, no I got it.
He say's, if he is a true gentleman....No, I really insist....
then you say. Ok. Thanks....Then you ( the girl )maybe a small yet wet kiss is in order, this will be payment enough ! and he will be all smiles, after the kiss & for the rest of the night !!
I am a guy, this would be the way I would work this situation, and this would be the outcome I would be looking for....maybe even expecting....

If you did the inviting you do the paying. He may offer to pay but tell him he can cover next time. That is a good way to ask for a next time.

If you asked him out you should pay for the tickets and anywhere else you go that night. Most guys however will usually pick up the tab for dinner. just don't expect it.
