I heard rawhide isn't safe for that same (breaking off parts) reason.

Nylabones are the best in the class of chews... just get the harder ones, not the flexible ones. Rawhide is bad on the teeth & also easy to choke on... especially for a small breed. Greenies are also dangerous.

I have chihuahuas and because they are so small, their jaw isn't very deep to hold their teeth. Shih tzu's wouldn't be much different. Edible nylabones are VERY hard. One on my chis lost a bottom incisor (front tooth), chewing one when she was 3 years old (and she has always had beautifully white teeth) and chipped a top incisor. She also loosened the teeth next to the lost tooth and she lost one of those this year (at 5). I will never allow my chis to chew a nylabone again. They chew rawhides because they don't tear the rawhide apart (watch how you dog chews and you'll see what your dog will do). Since you don't want to use rawhide, other options include bully sticks, beef tendons (great at cleaning teeth), pig's ears (but they are very fatty).

I'd avoid any processed chews like Nylabone and especially greenies. Greenies have been shown to be dangerous to some dogs and one of my chis threw up after eating a greenie. Some dogs appear to have an allergy to greenies as well as the whole obstruction issue.

Unfortunately, just about anything you give the dog, some dog somewhere has gotten sick or had a blockage with. You just have to decide what is a tolerable risk for you and your puppy.

There was a segment on the morning news about this just yesterday.
They soaked greenie's and regular dog biscuits in water for the same amount of time and showed the results.Biscuits fell apart -greenies stayed hard.Nylabone was said to be evan worse than greenies.Actual x-rays were shown of dogs intestines with greenies and nylabone blockages that had to be surgically removed.
Apparently dogs have died and company that makes greenies is in for a big lawsuit.
Glad I've never given my dogs either.

they arent safe because little pieces can break off and your dog can choke. use rawhide and your dog is so cute!
