My little dog is very overweight due to Cushings syndrome and arthritis that makes him reluctant to move around. He is also about 12 or 13 yrs old. Any suggestions are welcome. Thank you in advance.(the dog is under the vet's care)

Innova evo. it has all natural ingrediants and u can feed ur dog less and it will be satisfied easier.
Since u have a dog with a medical condition that causes weight gain, i would only feed twice a day and small portions, of the good quality food.
some people mentioned science diet and pedigree, well this food is fine if u want it to be hungry constantly and get allergies. I had a dog that was fed science diet and she had allergies. When i got smart and took her off the crap her allergies went away.
Pedigree is so full of fillers that is corn and grains u do not want to feed ur dog if it has weight issues. U know what corn does to livestock, it fattens them up, so do not feed ur dog a dog food that has corn or any grain products as the first ingrediants. Innova is a all natural food and much better for ur dog.

A good quality food and exercise. Feed the dog three small meals a day and get it to playing. If the dog is so overweight it won't play, take him for short walks two or three times a day.
Our pets need quality pet food. Read the ingredients list and learn what the stuff on there is and what it does (or does not do) to/for our pets. A quick pet food 101. If the pet food contains corn/corn products or by products it is a poor quality food. Do not pay attention to advertising, they all say there food is great. Corn is a filler that can trigger skin problems. (allergies, skin problems, itching and excessive shedding) By products is anything from an animal not fit for human consumption, including cancerous tissue. Quality foods have meat as the first ingredient. California Natural, Solid Gold, Innova and Merrick are a few of the best brands available. If the dog is under a vets care then I am shocked that they did not recommend Hill's Science Diet, or Royal Canin. Most decent companies make foods for overweight babies, and since he is oldr, i would suggest mixing it either with a little water to soften up the hard food, or with a small amount of canned food. Nutro has excellent foods as well. Try to stay away from foods with high fat and high protien contents, by-products, or fillers. BHT is a filler/by-product)...the more natural for him the better.

Start walking him a little bit each day and get him to excercise, he needs it, even at his age. Good luck with the food!!!

I say feed a food that you can reasonably afford and what works for you and your dogs. We feed Pedigree, but we also have 2 large dogs and 2 small dogs. It works for them, they are healthy and it's not terribly expensive. Some dogs do well on lesser foods, some don't. Our dogs get the runs from Old Roy, but yet my mother-in-law's dogs do not. So this is why I say feed what you can reasonably afford and what works for you and your dogs. To andthentherewasyael, How would you know how my dogs are on Pedigree? Have you seen my dogs at all? I assure you, that it works just fine for them. The two large breed dogs I have are a Siberian Husky and an Alaskan Malamute. The Malamute has been commented on how soft her fur is and how much it just shines and how healthy it is. Same with the Husky, their fur is healthy, they are healthy as are the two smaller dogs. If you notice I said what works for you and your dog, if you tried pedigree and it didn't work, that doesn't mean that for someone else's dog(s) the same result will occur.

Try raw meat, cut off fat, and avoid pork. Buy affordable cuts like beef liver, heart, chicken gizzards, etc. Brains, and visceral organs are a source of fantastic nutrition.

They're wolves, and love it! It will not fatten your pooch, since the food is not processed, or has corn and other additives that are harmful. To supplement for the minerals and vitamins lacking in a raw meat diet, use Consumer Report's First, or Second best dog feed brands: Nature's Balance ( mine does not like the flavor, though), or my favorite: Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul. I'll swear by those kibbles, I tell you. It is the best of the hollistic feeds, and the most affordable one as well. I speak by experience ;-)

Good Luck

Feed him any good small breed dry dog food that has it's first ingredient as protein stuff. And then only feed about 1/2 cup twice a day.

Ask your vet for recommendations.
