All of my cats have had emotional problems because I like to get them from shelters, ones that I think nobody would take.
Usually they were either wild or had owners that abused them.
I got one a few months ago, a huge gorgeous cat, 8 years old. They told me she was real mean. Well that's not true. If they were abused, they're just like people and are hypersensitive to anyone that approaches them since they are used to being smacked on the nose or someother ignorant treatment.
You have to go slow with these pets, most don't like to be approached from the front, so be gentle and watch what it is that makes them try to bite you.
My 'mean' cat has stopped biting and hissing completely.
She's gotten real affectionate, but when she comes in the bed, she pushes her face against the frame... hides her face.
Too many people are cruel to animals and it takes a lot of patience to help them overcome the fear.
I had one cat the quit biting but never would let me approach him from the front.
Make sure you handle the cat with confidence, they will feel secure knowing you are safe and in charge.
Cats are smarter than most people think.
You may be touching a sore spot on the body too. Try to pay attention what you are doing when she snaps or bites. If it's from touching a certain place, take her to the vet she might have a problem.

This happens to me all the time! It means that your cat is annoyed of you petting him for too long!! Cats don't like it when you pet them for too long, or pet them when they're eating and especially sleeping. My cat always bites me when I pet or do something to him in a way he would feel uncomfortable. FOR EXAMPLE: If I grab his paw when he's feeling playful he will jump down and bite me. Biting is also a form of "cat play". Don't worry about it, all cats do this at some period in their life (usually when they're younger and more active).

Could be any of these reasons:
1. Your movements irritated the cat
2. Your petting excited the cat to much
3. The cat is giving you nice little love bites
4. Cat is being very playfull
I like it when my cat bites me -- sometimes I even intentionally provoke them.

Amy A is right.
When mine acts like he's going to nip, I just stop petting and let him sit there as long as he likes. Later, he usually wants me to pet him again.
Not all cats do this, but many of them do.

I am not sure why "3" times, but sometimes mine bites me a lil... not hard... who knows?! She nibbles then rubs on me nibbles then rubs on me... Maybe she thinks she is doing something nice for you... you know how they nibble themselves to scratch an itch?
