Anywhere between 3-4 hours. It depends on the roast size. You can cook it all day on high if you add enough water or liquid to it. But the best way to cook a roast in a crock pot is on low for around 8 hours.

silverdiv......you are talking to the crock pot expert. You really want to cook your roast on low but if you have to cook it on high depending on the size of the roast it usually should take 3-4 hours. Take potatoes, carrots, onions, mushrooms and put them in the crock pot on about 2 inches of water, season your roast to your liking with salt/pepper, etc., and place into the crock pot and then fill about 1/2full with beef bullion and put on low, cover and let sit for about 8-10 hours, do not open the lid during this time. When you finally open the lid, the meat will fall apart and if it is a bone in roast it will fall off the bone and be as tender as anything you have ever had. It is a great way to do stews also, chickens, corned beef, heck anything that will fit can be cooked in a crock pot. Start in the AM go to work and when you return you have a meal, yummy, yummy. Sorry I am making myself hungry, you have a great day.

I always brown my roast on all sides in a pot on the stove w/onions and green onions and seasoning. Afterwards, I add water to a crock pot and let it cook on high for about 4 or 5 hours. Add some cornstarch or whatever you use to thicken your gravy plus 1-2 packages of Dry onion soup mix. Add potatoes and carrots about 1-1/2 hours before you expect it to be done. Serve over rice. Delicious!!

Approx 4 hours depending on its weight. If you are not constrained by time, however, cook it on low for 6 to 8 hours instead. You will have a far more tender and flavorful roast.

4 hours on high for a 2-3 pound roast. If it's bigger add 1/2 an hour for every pound after. Adding potatoes and carrots and onions? yumm.

I usually set it on Low and leave it overnight...then I put the crock in the fridge, and reheat it on High about an hour in advance of serving time. That works GREAT!
