Well, god actually wanted seven of some animals. See?

Genesis 7:2-3

2 Take with you seven [a] of every kind of clean animal, a male and its mate, and two of every kind of unclean animal, a male and its mate, 3 and also seven of every kind of bird, male and female, to keep their various kinds alive throughout the earth.

I think that was a little redudant - I mean, seven's an odd number. Somebody would've been left out of the fun of re-populating the entire planet.

River Tam: So we'll integrate non-progressional evolution theory with God's creation of Eden. Eleven inherent metaphoric parallels already there. Eleven. Important number. Prime number. One goes into the house of eleven eleven times, but always comes out one. Noah's ark is a problem.
Book: Really?
River Tam: We'll have to call it early quantum state phenomenon. Only way to fit 5000 species of mammal on the same boat.

It appears that God himself did most of the gathering while Noah built the ark, they were ready when he was. The two of each kind and the seven of that kind.

How can one collect the fowls of heaven? He had the help of God in this matter and from his faith, he and his family was saved.

I do not know in 1656 years from Eden when the world began just what the population was, the animals were before Adam and Eve.

God intervented, it's not like he has to check if every animal is which gender, he already knew and planned accordingly.
