Is using different white balance settings on a dSLR similar to using different filters on a film SLR? for example, would using the flourescent WB setting be the same as using a flourescent filter on a SLR?

In the sense that it balances the color of the light source to more accurately appear the color of sunlight at mid day in some mythical 'place', Yes they are the same.

But then, how they go about it and the level of control you have with the two methods varies greatly. White balance in a digital camera literally changes the level of sensitivity of the sensor to certain colors. Many cameras allow infinite settings between the max and minimum.

A physical filter actually filters out certain colors and prevents that color from getting past the lens. And you are stuck with what ever level of filtration your glass filter provides.

of course, instruction manual mode on your digital camera isn't as that's understood in greater finished-featured cameras. Your white stability is probable a mild-source mode, e.g., daylight hours, tungsten mild, night, coloration, cloudy, etc. i'm stunned that it facilitates you to set the ISO via fact it would be fairly person-friendly for a amateur to %. the incorrect putting. the end result ought to be photographs that are too darkish, too mild, too blurry, or too noisy. exposure reimbursement is much greater dazzling. it is used to ultimate the exposure while there is something interior the scene that fools the digital camera into the two decrease than- or over-exposing the image. the reason that i'm stunned is that a digital camera of this kind is marketed to naive consumers who does not have a clue approximately what exposure reimbursement does. to respond to your question, there is not any connection between the three valuable properties. They influence 3 countless issues.
