Writing's an important mode of:
-self expression
-communication
-documentation (for self or others)
-creativity
-organizing ideas into a coherent form
That was tough (and perhaps a reason why some people don't write!)

Reasons I do it:
It relieves stress.
I think more clearly.
It makes me happy.
It is intelligent.
You can write what ever you want.
If you are asking why people learn it,
It is a communicative skill.
It goes hand in hand with reading.
It is useful tool if you are learning a language.
It is a form of expressing oneself.

Personally, I write because its my job. I used to enjoy it. Actually, I used to love it. I did it all the time. You couldnt pry a pencil out of my hand. Now... well, if you ever love something, dont turn it into a job.
