Hi there...Common odours that are effective deterrents for cats are:
Citronella works best for cats as well as citrus scents such as orange or lemon (primarily towards cats), cayenne pepper, coffee grounds, pipe tobacco, lavender oil, lemon grass oil, citronella oil, peppermint oil, eucalyptus oil, and mustard oil.
"Havahart's Cat Repellent" uses capsaicin pepper and oil of mustard as its active ingredients. It repels by both taste and odor, has a lemon scent.
Every animal responds differently to each of these. Some will not be phased by them and others will be quite revolting.
For training purposes they are applied on items that are to encourage avoidance behaviours and not for use with a squirt bottle as they could harm the eyes or respiratory system. Test each substance and observe to see which works as a deterrent so that accidental injestion does not occur as some could then be fatal.
Coleus plants can be effective, but every cat responds differently so it is uncertain without experimenting.

MOTHBALLS are toxic to cats which contains the ingredient Naphthalene. Mothballs are approximately twice as toxic as paradichlorobenzene, and cats are especially sensitive to naphthalene. Signs of ingestion of naphthalene mothballs include emesis, weakness, lethargy, brown-colored mucous membranes and collapses. Paradichlorobenzene mothballs may cause GI upset, ataxia, disorientation, and depression. Elevations in liver serum biochemical values may occur within 72 hours of indigestion.

It's not these cats' fault, it is entirely the owners. You could confront the owners, but a lot get defensive quickly. In my area a cat is not allowed to leave the owners yard, and if they don't listen to you, and the law is the same for you, why don't you report them? My cat was doing this to my neighbour and he trapped him and sent him to the pound. $110 later my cat isn't allowed outside anymore lol. I just wish the neighbour had of come to me first. Just remember though, not everyone will go get their cat, and you don't want to punish the cat. You can get those automated sprinkler systems that go off with a sensor, and as some others have said, you can buy products to put in your garden to stop animals using it. I've seen them in pet stores. Goodluck!

There's only one proven way to keep cats out of the garden. I've tried it and it actually works. You just go over to the neighbors and ask them to keep their cats in their own yard. They are ruining you garden, etc. Most good neighbors will at least try.

Any big cat dung from your local zoo or safari park will do the trick. Ask for some, you'll be surprised how helpfull the keepers are. Moggies are scared stiff of it.

a very good question, now four things you can do about this ,
1, put a clear plastic bottle of water around your garden, it suppose to scare them,
2 you can buy anti pet spray from most hardware shops(wilko's in the uk)
3, you can buy a ultra sonic device for your garden, this will keep all cats from even coming near your place .
4, get a big dog , but thats not to nice ,
next door to me has the ultra sonic thing in his and now i dont even get them in mine , no cats for 50 meters, argos sell them .
good luck in your quest,

Every morning go and take a dump in your neighbours garden and keep on doing it until they stop their cats doing it in your garden.
