1 Cor. 12: 13, 30 "Truly by one spirit we were all baptized into one body... not all have gifts of healings, do they? Not all speak en tonges, do they?" (Also 1 Corinthians 14:26)

1 Cor.14:5 "Now I would like for all of you to speak in tongues, but i prefer that you prophesy. Indeed, he that prophesies is greater than he that speaks in tongues, unless, in fact, HE TRANSLATES, that the congregationmay recive upbuilding".

Are true Christians TODAY identified by the ability to "speak in tongues"?

John 13:35 says "By all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love among yourselves".

1 Cor. 13:1,8 says"If I speak in tongues of men and of angels but do not have love, i have becomea sounding piece of brass or a clashing cymbal. Love never fails. But whether there are tongues, they will CEASE"

Jesus sid that Holy Spirit would come upon hes followers and that they would be witnessess of him to the most distant part of the earth. -Acts 1:8- He instructed them to make disciples of people of all the nations - Matt. 28:19- He also foretold that this good news of the Kingdom would be preached in all the inhbited earth for a witness to all nations - Matt. 24:14- Who today, both as a group and individually, are doing this work? In harmony with what Jesus said, should we not look for this as an evidence that a group has Holy Spirit?

Is speaking in tongues to continue until that which is "Perfect" comes?

At 1 Corinthians 13:8 reference is made to several miraculous gifts -prophecy, tongues, and knowledge and prophecy- saying: "For we know in part, and we prophesy in part" Or as RS reads: "For our knowledge is imperfect and our prophecy is imperfect." Then verse 10 states:"But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away ." The woed "Perfect" is translated from the Greek te'lei-on, which conveys the thought of being full grown, complete, or perfect. Ro, By, and NW here render it "complere." Notice that it is not the gift of tongues that is said to be "imperfect", "in part," or partial. That is said of "prophecy" and "knowledge." In other words, even with those miraculous gifts, the early Christians had only an imperfect orpartial understanding of God's purpose.

But when the prophecies would come to fulfillment, when God's purpose would be accomplished, then "that which is pwefect", or complete, would come. So, this is obviosly not discussing how long the 'gift of tongues' would continue.

However, the Bible does indicate how long the 'gift of tongues' would be part of Christian wxperience. According to the record, this gift and the other gifts of the spirit were always conveyed to persons by the laying on of hands of the apostles of Jesus Christ of in their presence. - Acts 2:4, 14, 17; Acts 10:44-46; Acts 19:6 see also Acts 8:14-18-. Thus, after their death and when the individuals qho in that way dad received the gifts died, the miraculous gifts resulting from the operation of God'sspirit must have come to their end. Such a view agrees with the purpose of those gifts as stated at Hebrews 2:2-4.

Does not Mark 16:17, 18 show that the ability to speak with new tongues would be a sing identifying belivers?

It should be noted that these verses refer not only to speaking with new tongues, but also to handiling serpents and drinking deadly poison. Are all who "speak in tongues" also encouraging these practices?

Not every born again Spirit filled Christian does, but they can receive that gift too. Most Spirit filled Christians do.

Everyone receiving the filling of the Holy Spirit (not Holy Spitit, though Holy Spit is Good) can praise God or prophesy in an unknown language. It is received by the laying on of hands, or just in the church where the spirit is being poured out. Speaking in tongues is just a sign that a person is filled with the Holy Spirit (satan has his copy cat examples though). There is also the gift of discernment of spirits (good or bad).

The question is if person is filled with the Holy Spirit. If you don't know if you have been filled with the Holy Spirit there is a test to test yourself. Have you ever praised God & felt the Holy Spirit & just praised God in Spirit (known or unknown) overwhelmed in God's Love? If not, then you have not been filled with the Holy Spirit.

Speaking in Holy Language is a gift of the Holy Spirit.

At the day of Pentecost, people praised God & prophecied in different languages so that the travelers wondered how they knew their language and said such wonderful things of God.

Now-a-days, speaking in gibberish "tongues" is really an illusion of a demonic spirit....not The Holy Spirit. To speak in tongues means that one can speak and understand another "known" language suddenly and for the purpose of spreading the Gospel or for conversion of a sinner or nonbeliever. That's what happened when the Apostles were given the Gift of the Holy Spirit. There is little or no reason anymore for anyone to need the Gift of Tongues. However Satan and his league like to get people whipped up into an emotional frenzy. Anyone speaking in tongues should seek the help of a priest.

No the Bible says in 1 Corinthians 14 that all do not speak in tongues, even in those days. Tongues as you described them and as the Bible teaches it does not exist today. If anyone thinks it does then let them find a person who has never spoken a word of English and let them go and talk to them in their own language. It just doesn't happen. What is practiced today never happen until 1906 with a women named Agnus Osman. It is a phychic experience which anyone can do, but has nothing to do with true Christianity.

Not necessarily.

There are many gifts one can receive from the Holy Spirit and speaking in tongues is only one of them. Gifts are given for teh benefit of the community. Paul said that if people are to speak in tongues in public, then there must be another person there to interpret what is being said. Otherwise, it really serves no benefit.

Acts 2 verse 4

And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability

I know you meant "Spirit"..right?!

No...in the Bible is says,.."do all prophesy..do all speak with unknown tongues...?"
Each is given as the Spirit wills.
Speaking in tongues is a sign..and whenever you are baptised in the Spirit, whether there is evidence of speaking in tongues or not..there will diffinately be a change in your life that all will be able to see..you become something new in God.

No, and Catholics don't speak in tongues. Generally only Pentecostals or other evangelical Christians do, practice this gift of the Spirit, I think.

No, it says that some will have the gift and others will have the gift to understand. Others will have neither gift. Paul writes about this in II Corinthians. He says that speaking in tongues should not scare away a potential new convert.

I have had a problem with that a long time, the Church I used to attend, said that ongues was the evidence, of the HolyGhost, But I haven`t seen where it said that, I believe we are given gifts as God sees need, one may have tongues, another healing, another charity, what ever God sees fit, thats what I think.

What religion are you??
:O

1 Cor.. somewhere.. I forget the exact verse.
Look it up! :D
Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, aexcept I shall speak to you either by brevelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?
• • •
9 So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.
• • •
18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:
19 Yet in the church I had rather aspeak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.
Here is one verse!
