What is the origin of the phrase "Keep your eyes peeled"?

I dont know but I fear it may be something pretty nasty and painful...lol. Hopefully it means like keeping your eyelids open like a pealed banana or something.

It comes from the idea of "plucking" or all obstructions away from your eyes. Originally, it refered to plunder...another way of clarifying, "remove the peel, wrappings, etc." from your eyes...
