eating out in pub restaurants in my experience, use to be good generally, adequate at the very least but recently over the last year or two, its has become a bit of a commercial melt down!

Having experience of the trade, I would not eat out anywhere, as I know what goes on - most of the so-called pub food, is pre-packed. And also remember, a restaurant is only so good as its weakest member. No I wouldn't do it again unless desparate

Yes. GM constraints and the consumer wanting their meals faster has meant that the food quality and source has gone downhill. Country pubs are usually a safe bet and in towns and cities I would recommend the Spirit groups pubs, as there food is freshly made and have a great selection. Let me know where you are and Ill recommend.

Not the pubs near me. Their food has improved if anything. Not the pub chains but the independent ones. If you ever come to Hertfordshire you can get a great pub meal at a good price.

i live in the countryside and pub grub is nice, i think if you go in a small village pub the food is alot better and fresher. i went in a city pub the other week for a meal as i didnt fancy a mcDonalds, and i had frozen mince and frozen veg! it seems its easier these days to open a bag of frozen carrots than peel and cook nice tasty fresh ones.
Get a country pub lunch!

Because of the fact that pubs now rely on their main source of income from food opposed to beer a few years ago, landlords are having to reduce the cost of meals to stay in competition with other pubs. Reduction in cost of meals tend to mean that everything is bought in cheap now instead of homemade.
ie instead of good old british beef, a lot of pubs now serve cheap argentinian crap. A basic meal like steak and ale pie or lasagne is bought in frozen and heated up in the microwave.

yes and no!

yes, because it's now the norm for landlords to buy in frozen foods, breaded fish, chicken kiev, lasagne, chips, veg, puddings etc. it's cheaper for them to buy, it tends to be 'portioned' so there's less waste and it keeps for months so it makes more economical sense than buying perishables. unfortunately, this means that there are a lot of pubs selling exactly the same meals...you have to rely on their home-made specials for variety!

no because the overall standard has improved a great deal. obviously landlords are only going to buy the foods that his customers buy, the quality of frozen foods has improved dramatically over the years. also, most pubs now cater for vegetarians which is a big improvement on how it used to be!!

I think it differs depending on where you go; Weatherspoons are very cheap and the food's not bad. I've never been to a gastro-pub though.

There is a good food guide for pubs, maybe, you could have a quick look at your local newsagents or Smiths.
